With the takeover of an existing company the new owners (who manufacturing cylinder blocks and engine heads) wanted to create a new brand to launch the product into the American market. The name 'Katipo' drew qualities of the spider (deadly, powerful, fearful) while also stamping a New Zealand feel to the product. The icon represented both the spiders markings and the shapes of the product.
